A Few of My Favorite Things Friday

No I am not going to burst out singing songs from The Sound of Music, though it it definitely on a continuous running loop inside my head. Navigating the world as a gluten free, dairy free, and no high fructose corn syrup consumer is not always easy and sometimes finding products that are healthy, nutritious, and actually delicious making you crave for more is not as easy as it seems. Luckily there are ton of brands that are actually catching on to this trend and new products are always hitting the shelves in the local market. As I become more informed and discover a few of new favorite things I thought that I would start sharing them with you! I always try to have a protein for breakfast and that is a lot easier said than done. I have about three breakfast options, I’m not joking, that I currently rotate and let’s just say that get’s BORING! I mean seriously I eat hummus with veggies, egg whites, or  a protein shake. While these two items might fall under the “shake” category this definitely adds options to my morning routine.

My two newest obsessions are Svelte Organic Protein Shakes and Califia Farms Chocolate Protein Pure Almond Milk. Both are equally delicious and amazing!

Califia Chocolate Protein Pure Almond Milk is only 140 calories and 8 grams of protein! I love the low calorie content which allows me to throw it in a blender and combine with a banana! Can anyone say Chocolate Moo!! Yum!

These are certified NON-GMO and in a BPA free bottle. Not only does this help my dairy sensitive tummy, but they are also vegan, soy free, dairy free, and gluten free. They have an include line up of products including the best almond milk on the planet! I don’t joke about almond milk! From almond milks to pure iced coffee’s Califia Farms has you covered!

Celebrating with my three medals. I DID IT!

  4. I am optimistic that the more elusive characters will be along the course. I would love to see Constance Hatchaway and Lillian Gracey aka The Tightrope Walker both from The Haunted Mansion. They were both along the course at the Inaugural Tinker Bell 10k while the line was long they were worth the wait!My favorite ladies!
  5. Celebrate this amazing weekend with a gluten-free & dairy-free cake made by Chef Chris at Storytellers. Angie’s Boom Chicka Pop…Review

My daughter Melissa asked me to be a guest  reviewer on her Blog “13 going on Crazy.” I jumped at the chance to taste a new popcorn, Angie’s  BOOM CHICKA POP Popcorn!

I am not surprised she asked me, as she grew up in a house where popcorn was always at the top of her Mother’s favorite snacks. I do not mean occasionally, but a nightly snack!  She witnessed my sampling all kinds of popcorn from store bought to stove top popped to popcorn over a cracking fire in our fireplace. Obviously, she considers me to be the family popcorn wizard. I am gluten free and dairy free, and as I read the ingredient list; I was quite impressed and very excited. And no GMO’s! Just one bite and I knew this was going to be a big winner and only 35 calories per cup! Three cups fills the popcorn bowl perfectly. My  two personal favorites made me do a happy dance! The sea salt popcorn is seasoned perfectly and gives you the extra POW you would want a salted popcorn to have to satisfy those salty cravings. The lightly sweet popcorn perks up your taste buds when you need something crunchy and sweet.  What an amazing combo! This is a must to be added to your shopping list. I know for sure, my pantry will always have an extra bag or two, as every night is BOOM CHICKA POP popcorn night in my house!!!

Grab yourself a nice warm bowl of oatmeal today, because it’s National Oatmeal Day! For my friends who are gluten free this might not be as easy as oatmeal is not traditionally a gluten free breakfast item. (This oatmeal is not actually sold at Williams-Sonoma stores)

GFreeConnect Review and Shopportunity Giveaway

As a gluten-free shopper is it often difficult and frustrating to buy products that are sometimes very expensive to only discover that they taste like cardboard. GFreeConnect helps take away the guess work in purchasing gluten-free product. GFreeConnect is a company that provides samples of gluten free products and coupons that can be used on full size products.

GFreeConnect decided to send me the “introductory” care pack. I absolutely love the concept behind this company as it gives consumers the opportunity to try out various products that you might not have discovered otherwise.

In terms of what you get in the care pack, it offers great variety. I love that it arrived with a few full-size products in addition to sample sizes. My package arrived with full size sugar cones and cookies. The variety of samples were also excellent too. From sweets to savory snacks this was a very well-rounded sample pack. In addition to the food, I also received coupons. I loved this. Finding gluten-free coupons are not always the easiest to get your hand on. Some of my favorites in this pack? The Schar Hazelnut Wafters, (I already love this brand, but never tried these!), Enger G. Crackers, (I must locate this ASAP!), and PopChips BBQ!

The amazing people at GFreeConnect would love to mail one lucky 13 Going on Crazy follower a special care package! The Shopportunity Giveaway start today, March 11th ending on March 15th!

Thanksgiving Pictures 2012

Happy Saturday! I hope that everyone is enjoying the long holiday weekend. I plan on going for a long run as soon as I don’t feel congested anymore! I wanted to share pictures with you that I took on Thanksgiving. My unconventional Thanksgiving started out amazing! First my family and I stopped for gas and thanks to my grocery club card I saved $0.20 a gallon bringing gas to $3.65! Score! In LA that’s a great price! One of the many reasons that I love living in LA is that movies are released in limited release prior to being nationally released.

On the way to see Anna Karenina.

After the movies we headed into Disneyland prior to our dinner reservations at Storytellers Cafe. See I told you my Thanksgiving was unconventional. My mom and I had a great afternoon going on lots of rides. It was surprisingly very crowded!

This was the best, well my first gluten-free Thanksgiving’s that I have ever had. Gluten-free turkey, stuffing, green beans, gravy, and cranberry sauce! The yams with roasted marshmallows and brown sugar were heavenly! Thank you Chef Chris for making yet another delicious meal!

Would you expect anything less from Disney? Being gluten-free a pumpkin pie could find itself a tricky proposition, but Chef Chris made the most adorable gluten-free pumpkin pies inside an actual pumpkin! What a great idea!

What is a day at Disneyland without fireworks, hot chocolate, and gluten-free cupcakes? This was a great way to end the day! I hope that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgivings with their loved ones as much as I did!

QOTD: What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?

A Great Weekend Starts Here……

What a fantastic Friday I had. Spent the day with my Brother and Fiancee. Went to The Original Pancake House in Redondo Beach to find out that they don’t accommodate gluten free.  I will never give them a penny of my money again.  None the less we had a great breakfast at the beach.  Stay tuned for the rest of the weekend!

Eating breakfast at Redondo Beach. It sure was cold but so much better than eating at The Original House of Pancakes

Here’s what we had for breakfast. Oh it was so good! A gluten free bagel with lox and cream cheese 🙂

An after breakfast picture. It was windy and chilly but we sure did have a good time. Thanks to the stranger who took the picture of us 🙂

QOTD: Who do you go for the best gluten free breakfast?

Disneyland Half Marathon 2012

Labor Day weekend…that means it’s once again time for the Disneyland Half MarathonThis was the 7th Disneyland Half Marathon, and my 4th time participating. This was also my last race of 13 Going on Crazy. I look forward to this race every year. They have tweaked the parks part of the course again this year because Cars Land and Buena Vista Street are now open! Runners now run through Cars Land, which was really cool. I think that it fair to say that Cars Land was the hit of the summer, if you have not yet had the chance to check it out I suggest that you do!

Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend always feels like a whirlwind and I always wish that there was more time. This years race was particularly special as my brother, Scott, and his fiance, Dana, not only surprised me, but I was also able to spend the weekend with my friend Briana and her mom, Bonnie.

The race was a magical experience. As always I woke up early with my family, put on my mouse ears and Minnie Mouse tutu and headed to the start line. My friend Briana and I started out together, which was a lot of fun since I typically run my races solo. As I reflect on the race, all the miles and training in between, it is all worth it when you turn the corner on Main Street in Disneyland and run towards the castle. The feeling that you have in your heart and soul is exhilarating.

After the race it was a quick fireman shower for me and I was off to the parks. Prior to heading into the park my family and I went for brunch at one of our favorite dining places in Disneyland.

Being that I am gluten-free eating out can sometimes be a challenge, but in Disneyland I found a place where I could hang up my mouse ears for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Storyteller’s Cafe at the Grand California Hotel cater to those who have food allergies of all kinds. My families inside joke this past weekend was that this trip was like being on a cruise ship with one dining room, one reserved table, and a set server for all your meals. A loud hip hip hooray for our servers Katie and Manny and Chef Chris who made each and every dining experience better than the best.

This weekend will always hold a special place in my heart and I always need to remember Walt Disney saying, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” I DID IT I ran 13 half marathons in 13 months!!

QOTD: Did you particpate in the Disneyland Half Marathon? What was your favorite part of the course?

Are You Ready For Me, Mickey? One week till Labor Day 2012!

By this time next Friday I will be the Disney Half Marathon 2012 Expo picking up my bib!! Could next Friday get here any sooner?

Here is my top 5 Disneyland Half Marathon Wish List…

1. Have an amazing time celebrating crossing the finish line and completing 13 half marathons in 13 months!!

2. Not have any GI issues during the race.

3. Find my “Minnie Mouse” ears before race weekend! I know that I can always buy new ones, but these ears have been with me at every RunDisney race!!

4. Enjoy the world-famous, best gluten-free pancakes by Chef Chris at Storytellers Cafe at the Grand California Hotel. Seriously how could a self-respecting adult not appreciate Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes? Yummy!! Forks Up!!

5.  Celebrate this amazing weekend with a gluten-free cake. This one is on Disneyland! A dream is a wish and a girl can dream right?

QOTD: If you’re running Disneyland next weekend, what are your goals?

July Monthly Goal Rewind and August Goals

I woke up this morning in shock that today was August 1st. I mean seriously where is the time going? I can’t believe that there are only 5 months left of the year. If feels like yesterday when I decided to run 13 half marathons in 13 months. August will be bittersweet  as I only have 2 races left! OMG!! I can’t believe it!! Though I still can’t always see it I know that I have come a long way since last September when I started this challenge. I can feel it in my bones, August is going to be a great month! Everything is starting to click with my body in terms of running, I am adapting to eating Gluten-Free, and I am starting to notices the positive effects eating gluten-free has on my body.

Being that it is August 1st also means it’s time to take a look back at my July goals and see how I did:

1.) Respect my Garmin (B-) I did better than expected though I still poop out during my run and at times need to walk a bit than running.

2.) Discover 2 local Gluten-Free restaurants: (C) I visited one restaurant, Maria’s Italian Kitchen. At least I’m half way there with my goal, but I still need to discover other local options, not everyone I eat out with wants to go to Whole Foods! Thanks Mom for indulging me!

3.) Get More Sleep: (A+) At the least I accomplished one goal all the way! I made sure that I listened and respected my body and gave it the full 8 hours of sleep that I needed.

Which brings me to my goals for August.

1.) Be fully ready for the Disneyland Half: Most importantly make sure that my stomach is under control.

2.) Read 2 Books: I believe that it is important to balance mind, body, and soul.

3.) Bikini ready by Labor Day: My body might be ready for a bikini, I however am still lacking the confidence and positive body image to brave wearing a bikini. More importantly I need to work on accepting my body.

4.) Respect my Garmin: See July goals.

5.) Discover at least 1 local Gluten-Free restaurantSee July goals. It is never good when you are regarded as a “REGULAR” at Whole Foods for dinner.

6.) Sync my GarminSharing my progress and daily miles via Daily Mile and the little widget on the right will help keep me accountable!! You can always check in with me and track my progress based on the Daily Mile widget on the right side of your screen!
